Prevalence of Intestinal Parasites in Patients With Constipation: A Retrospective Study From Southeastern Turkey

Abstract

Objective: Certain intestinal parasites may adhere to the intestinal mucosa, causing inflammation and mucosal damage. This condition can disrupt bowel motility and potentially lead to constipation. Parasite-induced constipation may persist if left untreated and can negatively affect intestinal health. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of intestinal parasites in patients presenting with complaints of constipation.

Materials and Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on the stool examination results of 809 patients who presented with constipation at Siirt Training and Research Hospital between January 2018 and November 2024. Stool samples were analyzed using the Nativ-Lugol staining method and the Entamoeba Antigen Cassette Test.

Results:Among the 809 patients included in the study, 19 (2.3%) tested positive for Entamoeba histolytica/E.dispar, 12 (1.5%) for Blastocystis hominis, and 10 (1.2%) for Giardia intestinalis. Statistical analysis revealed no significant association between the presence of intestinal parasites and patient sex and age.

Conclusion: Although E. histolytica and G. intestinalis are typically associated with diarrheal symptoms, our findings suggest they should not be overlooked in patients with constipation. Their role in altering bowel function warrants further attention, particularly in endemic regions.
